This journey through Iceland is crafted for travelers who dream of breathtaking landscapes, wild nature, and true adventure. You’ll witness powerful waterfalls, volcanic beaches, mighty glaciers, and —with some luck— the magical Northern Lights. The itinerary blends accessible hikes with scenic drives, making it ideal for those who want to explore without needing prior mountaineering experience. Still, Iceland is a land of contrasts, and its untamed nature requires both curiosity and resilience.

The Positives

  • 🏔️ Some days include moderate walks on mountains and glaciers.

  • ⛺ This is not a comfort-focused trip; wild, unpredictable nature is part of the experience.

Itinerary

✈️ Day 1 — International flight from your country of origin to Reykjavík.

This marks the official start of your adventure, departing from your home country towards Iceland. Depending on your point of origin, many travelers will depart on Day 1 and arrive in Reykjavík during the course of Day 2.

📍 Day 2 — Welcome & Preparation

This day is specifically reserved for reception and waiting, as all participants gather after their arrival in Iceland. Travelers will be arriving on different flights and at different times, so those who arrive early will have free time to rest or explore Reykjavík on their own.

We remain in Reykjavík throughout this day, since flight delays are always possible, and this schedule allows time for the entire group to come together before officially starting the journey around the island.

🏞️ Day 3 — Golden Circle

📍 Þingvellir National Park and its tectonic rift
📍 Öxarárfoss Waterfall
📍 Geysir Geothermal Area
📍 Gullfoss Waterfall
📍 Gamla Laugin Thermal Pool

Each site is subject to access conditions on that day. At the end of the visits, we return to Reykjavík where we will spend the night.

🌋 Day 4 — Blue Lagoon & Reykjanes Peninsula

Today we explore the Reykjanes Peninsula, where the earth is still alive and the landscape changes with every eruption. If conditions allow and the area is open to the public, we will hike among lava fields and recent craters.

Later, we will relax in the turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon — an unforgettable highlight of your trip to Iceland. At the end of the day, we return once again to Reykjavík.

🏔️ Day 5 — Snæfellsnes Bay & possible aurora hunting

We dedicate two days to exploring the magical Snæfellsnes Peninsula, in western Iceland. We begin by visiting the famous black church of Budakirkja, and then continue with:

📍 Saxhóll Volcano (easy hike)
📍 Skarðsvík Beach, with its golden sands
📍 Svörtuloft Lighthouse, perched on dramatic lava cliffs
📍 The charming town of Grundarfjörður

During the roadtrip, it is likely we will make some additional stops of interest, but the main focus will be on the most special highlights of the peninsula.

🌌 This night, depending on solar activity and weather conditions, we may take the chance to go aurora hunting — either at Budakirkja or at Kirkjufellsfoss. Fingers crossed for clear skies and a magical show!

🏔️ Day 6 — Kirkjufellsfoss & Snæfellsnes Bay

We begin our second day in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula visiting the iconic Kirkjufell Mountain and its waterfall, often snow-covered at the end of winter. We then continue to the dramatic cliffs of Lóndrangar, where we will stop for lunch and take time for photography.

This will be our final visit in Snæfellsnes Bay before starting the drive back to Reykjavík. On the way, we may make an extra stop to enjoy the golden hour and say farewell to the peninsula with one last stunning view.

🌊 Day 7 — South Coast of Iceland

Today we leave Reykjavík behind to explore the untamed nature of Iceland’s South Coast. We will visit breathtaking waterfalls, volcanic black sand beaches, and dramatic cliffs shaped by the ocean and glaciers.

📍 Seljalandsfoss Waterfall
📍 Skógafoss Waterfall
📍 Dyrhólaey Cliffs
📍 Vík í Mýrdal (Village)

🌌 This night, depending on weather conditions, we may have the chance to witness the Northern Lights from the Vík viewpoint or another nearby location.

🌊 Day 8 — South Coast of Iceland (Day 2)

We begin the day at the powerful Reynisfjara Beach, a world-famous site known for its towering basalt columns and dramatic black sands. This place is considered dangerous if you get too close to the ocean waves, but truly breathtaking when admired with respect.

Next, we head to the mysterious Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, one of Iceland’s most enchanting natural wonders.

The day concludes with rest in the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

💎 Day 9 — Svartifoss & the Diamond Beach

After breakfast in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, we head to Svartifoss, known as Iceland’s “Black Waterfall” thanks to the striking basalt columns that frame it, similar to the formations seen at Reynisfjara Beach.

From there, we continue to Diamond Beach and the stunning Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where icebergs drift ashore and glisten like diamonds on the black sand. With some luck, we may also spot seals resting on the ice.

The hike to the waterfall is not very long, and the afternoon — though cold — will be spent enjoying this remote and spectacular Icelandic landscape.

❄️ Day 10 — Ice Cave Exploration & Glacier Trekking

After breakfast, we set out for an unforgettable adventure in the Blue Ice Cave, famous for its translucent formations that glow with filtered light through millennia-old ice layers. This experience lasts until midday, followed by a guided glacier trek, crossing crevasses and admiring natural ice sculptures that look as if they belong to another planet.

The hike is safe and guided, and the afternoon — though cold — will reward us with breathtaking views and memories to last a lifetime. If time and conditions allow, we will end the day with the golden hour at Diamond Beach.

🏖️ Day 11 — Stokksnes Beach & Eastfjords

Early in the morning, we visit Stokksnes to admire the breathtaking view of Vestrahorn Mountain, one of Iceland’s most photographed landscapes thanks to its dramatic peaks reflected in the sea.

After enjoying this unique setting of black dunes and sharp ridges, we continue to Höfn, a picturesque fishing town where we’ll have lunch by the ocean.

Finally, we drive onward to Egilsstaðir, where we will spend the night.

🌄 Day 12 — Hengifoss & Seyðisfjörður

Leaving Egilsstaðir, we start the morning with a hike to Hengifoss, one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland at an impressive 128 meters. Its unique red and black rock layers are formed by alternating bands of clay and volcanic ash.

In March, the trail may be covered with snow or ice, but it is passable with caution. The round-trip hike takes 2–3 hours, with moderate difficulty due to the slopes.

In the afternoon, we continue to the charming village of Seyðisfjörður, famous for its blue church (Seyðisfjarðarkirkja) and colorful wooden houses overlooking the fjord.

🏞️ Day 13 — Stuðlagil Canyon & Mývatn

Today is dedicated to exploring the breathtaking Stuðlagil Canyon, one of those places that continues to amaze even after seeing photos. We will walk along the Jökla River, whose waters can appear turquoise or glacial brown depending on the season, rainfall, or meltwater flow.

The visit will take about half a day, with time to enjoy trails, viewpoints, and quiet moments to admire the scenery.

In the afternoon, we continue our route towards the Mývatn region, an area full of geothermal contrasts and surreal landscapes.

🌊 Day 14 — Dettifoss, Mývatn & Akureyri

From the Mývatn region, we set out to visit Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe, fed by the waters of the Jökulsá á Fjöllum River, which originates from the Vatnajökull Glacier.

The surroundings are awe-inspiring, with volcanic landscapes and canyons that showcase the island’s ancient power. Later, we return to the Mývatn Nature Baths for a relaxing geothermal soak.

By the end of the day, we continue to Akureyri, where we will spend the night by the fjord.

⏳ Depending on time and how the activities unfold, we may also make a quick visit to the geothermal area of Hverir — although this is not guaranteed.

🚐 Day 15 — Return to Reykjavík

After breakfast, we take some time to explore Akureyri, the charming capital of the north.

We then begin our journey back to Reykjavík, aiming to arrive before nightfall.

🕒 Day 16 — Free Day in Reykjavík

This day is reserved as a safety buffer, allowing flexibility in case of unforeseen weather changes, road closures, or delays. It ensures a smooth return without stress or rush before the journey home.

If no delays occur throughout the trip, this day can also be used for an optional private tour in Iceland — such as whale watching, horseback riding, or visiting additional natural sites near Reykjavík.

✈️ Day 17 — Return Home

This day marks the return home, according to each traveler’s flight schedule. Depending on flight connections and time zones, arrival back home may extend into Day 18.
