El Azufral is located within Finca La Chingada, on the slopes of Zunil Volcano. From the road leading to Fuentes Georginas, the route continues for approximately 4.5 kilometers along a dirt road, which can be covered on foot in about 1.5 hours or by 4×4 vehicle.
From the finca, an additional 1.5-kilometer hike leads to the geothermal area. The site takes its name from the sulfur deposits found around the fumaroles and offers panoramic views of Santa María Volcano.
A Maya altar used for ancestral ceremonies is also located here, so visitors should approach the area respectfully. Do not place your face or any part of your body close to the fumaroles, as the steam and hot surfaces can cause burns.
El Azufral can be visited year-round, although sunrise is the most recommended time because skies are more likely to be clear. Cloud cover often increases in the afternoon, though on favorable days the area can also offer spectacular sunsets.
